Add 'pressure' to low-voltage electrical appliances
Recently, the Saudi Arabian Customs announced that starting from June 2012, it will prohibit the import of electrical products suitable for 127V and below. It also announced that for the next five years, the sale of electrical products with a rated voltage lower than 220V will be banned in the market, with only some special electrical products allowed to be sold for another 15 years.
Due to historical reasons, Saudi Arabia has long had a situation of 'one country, two voltages', namely the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which has two rated voltages of 127V and 220V. Generally speaking, small household appliances are mostly 127V, while large appliances like air conditioners and washing machines are mostly 220V. If a 127V electrical product is mistakenly connected to a 220V voltage, the consequences could be disastrous. In recent years, in order to reduce power loss during transmission, further lower electricity prices, and reduce household fire incidents, the Saudi Arabian government has gradually introduced a series of policies and product standards to unify the domestic household voltage towards 220V.
According to statistics from the Yiwu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, in 2010, there were a total of 99 batches of electromechanical products exported to Saudi Arabia that passed inspection by this bureau, with a value of 3.39 million USD, equivalent to 21.696 million RMB. As of June 28 this year, there have been 76 batches of legally inspected electromechanical products exported to Saudi Arabia by this bureau, involving 24 exporting production enterprises.
In light of the increasingly favorable export situation, the Yiwu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reminds production enterprises: first, to communicate with customers as early as possible to inform them of this regulation and prepare for the transition to products suitable for 220V voltage in advance to avoid unnecessary losses after the ban is implemented; second, to increase technical investment and focus on developing 220V electrical products; third, to actively contact inspection and quarantine departments and relevant certification bodies to ensure that newly developed 220V electrical products meet export standards.
